About our cause
In May 2022, Cumbria Rural Choirs was re-launched as Cumbria Singers. This change was a response to the increasing number of members who had no connections to the choirs that were originally affiliated to Cumbria Rural Choirs when it was established in 1950.
Cumbria Singers welcomes new members with or without prior experience of choral singing. There are no auditions to join. Instead, its rehearsal framework provides the additional support of online vocal exercises and the choral lines for the works that will be performed in the annual concert. These are provided by the Conductor and Music Director who is leading the choir for the season. Members can access and use the online resources at anytime between the four full day rehearsals which take place between Sept – April. Choir members have commented favourably on the additional confidence that these resources have given them.
The rehearsals are held at Ullswater College in Penrith, leading to the BIG SING in Carlisle Cathedral, where the choir is accompanied by professional musicians and soloists. Large scale choral works that are more challenging for smaller choirs to perform are the focus of its concerts. With over 100 members and the leadership of a charismatic conductor, members describe the rehearsals and performance as being ‘inspirational and magical’. Audiences also appreciate the high quality sound and the visual impact of listening and watching the choir, the conductor and the musicians in action.
Singing is good for everyone! It promotes a sense of well being and it also beneficial to physical health because of its emphasis on breath control and relaxation. Members also appreciate the opportunity to make new friends with similar interests, which counteracts the loneliness of living in isolated rural communities.
Cumbria Singers also supports other Cumbria based choirs and music societies/charities by advertising them in its concert programme, circulating information to its members and, when suitable opportunities arise, sharing the proceeds of its fundraising events.
